Today in my home town of Canberra (ACT, Australia), the Legislative Assembly passed the same sex marriage bill - the first in our country!
The bill was supported by 8 Labor MLAs and 1 Green MLA.
All 8 of the Liberal MLAs opposed the bill.
Our Federal government (the Liberals) plan to challenge the bill in the High Court.
Greens MLA Shane Rattenbury said:
"Denying equal marriage rights to same-sex couples is an affront to human rights which says, ‘you’re not allowed to express or formalise your love in the same way as other couples in our society’. From today, through the passage of this bill, the ACT puts an end to this form of discrimination."
And our Deputy Chief Minister, Andrew Barr, who is gay, has dubbed the ACT, the Rainbow Territory
This is a huge step for Australia, especially with a liberal government.
Today I am so proud to be Canberran!
